Spa Etiquette in Thailand: Dos and Don'ts

2 min read

Spa etiquette in Thailand is simple: arrive a little early, dress modestly, speak up about pressure, and treat the therapist and the space with respect. Thai therapists genuinely welcome feedback, so there is no need to be shy. This guide covers the main dos and don'ts so you can relax fully at your Phuket spa.

At Niyama Spa & Wellness in Cherngtalay, near Laguna and Bangtao Beach, our team will guide you through every step, but a little preparation helps you enjoy it even more.

Before Your Treatment: What to Do

  • Arrive 10 to 15 minutes early so you are not rushed and can settle in.

  • Shower first if you have been at the beach or pool.

  • Tell your therapist about injuries, allergies, pregnancy or areas to avoid.

  • Put your phone on silent and keep valuables in the locker provided.

  • Wear light, comfortable clothing that is easy to change out of.

Thai Spa Etiquette: Cultural Dos and Don'ts

Thai culture has a few gentle customs that are good to know. The head is considered the most respected part of the body, and the feet the lowest.

  • Do greet your therapist with a smile. A slight bow with palms together, the wai, is always appreciated.

  • Do say thank you at the end: khop khun krap (men) or khop khun kha (women).

  • Don't touch a therapist's head or point your feet toward anyone.

  • Don't drink alcohol before a massage. It makes it harder to feel what your body needs.

  • Don't arrive late if you can help it, as treatment time may be shortened.

Communicating During Your Massage

Your comfort matters more than politeness. If the pressure is too strong, say it. A few useful Thai words: bao bao means softer, nak nak means firmer, and sabai means comfortable. You can also simply say lighter or stronger in English. Let your therapist know too if the room feels too warm or cool.

Privacy, Modesty and What to Wear

You will be given a robe and disposable underwear or shorts for oil treatments, and you are covered with towels throughout, with only the area being worked on exposed. For a traditional Thai massage you will usually wear loose clothing provided by the spa. You decide your own comfort level, and you can change it at any time.

Tipping in Thai Spas

Tipping is appreciated but never required. Many guests leave a small tip for a treatment they enjoyed, often around 10 percent. Tips can be handed to your therapist or left at reception.

After Your Treatment

Take your time getting up, drink water or herbal tea, and avoid rushing straight into a busy schedule. A little quiet time helps you keep the calm feeling for the rest of the day.
